The characteristic limestone spur Monte dei Diavoli, at 117 metres above sea level, is the highest point in the Manduria area. It stands alone in the middle of a vast flat area rich in Mediterranean maquis ? taking on an almost foreboding appearance. Its proximity to the ancient Messapic settlement of Li Castelli might associate the mount with pagan fire rituals, however, its particular contours have lent strong credence to the belief over the centuries that the mount is indeed of volcanic origin.
