The Salina dei Monaci is a 25-hectare sandy depression, covering an area behind the dunes and separated from the sea by sandy knolls in which juniper thrives. The salt-loving (halophile) flora here welcomes numerous bird species including pink flamingos. The salt marsh was managed by Benedictines from the 11 to 15 centuries and is surrounded by salicornieto (salt land) ? an invaluable habitat for many migratory species such as the black-winged stilt, for which it is an ideal feeding and nesting site.
