The River Chidro is fed by karst aquifers that fill a 12-metre crateriform basin; its depths are populated by mullet and eels while the vegetation along the banks is a home to species incuding coots, grebes and grey herons. In the stretch of sea in front, there have been many archaeological finds, including nine marble sarcophagi. Legend has it that St Peter, travelling to Rome, landed here and that in these waters he celebrated the first Christian baptisms on Italian soil.
